It’s Okay to Stand Still: What to Do When You Feel Stuck, Scared, or Uncertain About Your Career

Why pausing doesn’t mean failing — and how this season may be quietly preparing you for a pivot

As a career coach, my job is to help people move forward.

I help people clarify what they want, identify what’s getting in the way, and take meaningful steps toward their full potential. I challenge people to think bigger, stop settling, and ask hard questions about whether they’re truly living the life and career they want.

And I believe deeply in all of that.

But there’s something I don’t say often enough — and it feels important to say it out loud right now.

A lot of people are struggling.

I don’t know many people who would say that 2025 was their best year ever. In fact, I’ve heard the opposite far more often. And for many, 2026 has already arrived with a lot of weight — uncertainty, fear, exhaustion, and a sense that the ground keeps shifting beneath us.

There are very real forces at play right now: economic pressure, job instability, political tension, global uncertainty, and a constant hum of bad news that never really shuts off.

I tend not to talk much about politics or administration-level issues in my work — not because I’m avoiding hard conversations, but because I genuinely want to be someone who unites, not divides.

What I do know is this: regardless of where people land politically or ideologically, many of us are feeling the strain of this moment.

And it’s heavy.

So I want to say this clearly, especially if you’re feeling scared, stuck, behind, or unsure of your next move:

It is okay if right now, all you are doing is being.

Not every season is meant for bold leaps, massive reinvention, or relentless progress. Some seasons are about staying upright. About getting through the day. About catching your breath. About not making things worse.

And that does not mean you’ve failed.

I also want to be honest about something else: I’m not a bullshitter. I don’t believe that there’s “a silver lining in every moment.” Some moments are just hard. Some seasons are unfair. Some circumstances are legitimately scary.

But I do believe in asking a different kind of question — not “How do I spin this into something positive?” but instead:

  • What can I learn from this?
  • What is this season showing me about what I value?
  • What am I realizing I want more of — or absolutely refuse to tolerate anymore?

During COVID, many of us were forced — whether we wanted to or not — to pause and take stock. Careers shifted. Priorities changed. People left industries, cities, relationships, and versions of their lives that no longer fit.

It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t pretty. But it was clarifying.

And I think we’re in another moment like that now.

This might not be the season where you sprint.

But it might be the season where you notice.

Where you quietly reassess.

Where you question assumptions you’ve been carrying for years.

Where you stop pretending everything is fine just to keep the peace.

And maybe — when the fog lifts — you pivot.

If you’re someone who feels like you should be doing more right now, I want to gently offer this reframe:

Standing still can be a conscious, wise choice.

Rest can be strategic.

Reflection can be productive.

Movement will come. Momentum will come. Action will come.

But for now, if all you can do is show up, breathe, and keep yourself steady — that is enough.

And when you’re ready to ask, “How might I use this moment to pivot my life?”

I’ll be here to help you answer it.
